My family say my daughter’s name will ruin her life from the moment she’s born’

A woman has revealed how her sister told her she would be ruining her daughter’s life “from the moment she draws breath” if she sticks with her choice of baby name.

In an anonymous post on Reddit, the woman explained that after years of trying for a baby, she and her husband have fallen pregnant.

After thinking long and hard, the couple finally settled on the name Lyra (pronounced Lie-ra) for their baby girl, which they loved.

The mum-to-be said that during a conversation with her sister, whom she named ‘Beth’, the name came up – and Beth was not a fan.

“She became very stern with me and told me I would be ruining my daughter’s life because ‘every single year in school, every time she has a substitute teacher, and every single job interview she’ll be called Leera not Lyra,’” she said.

“She then went on a long rant pretty much saying ‘I’m so sick of you millennials giving your kids stupid names’ and ‘you worked so hard for this baby and you’re going to f*** up her life from the moment she draws breath.”

Since Beth is a teacher, the woman says she’s “legitimately concerned” that there’s partial truth to what she’s saying.

“I certainly wouldn’t mind if Lyra wanted to change her name when she’s older, but I don’t want to cause any harm to my baby,” she added.

“I told my husband what happened and he’s livid and is trying to comfort me, but I need a vote.”

So, she asked users whether she was being unreasonable for wanting to name her little girl Lyra, and the majority of people said her sister was overreacting, and that the name was perfectly acceptable.

One person said: “Did someone p*** in your sister’s cereal? While I understand where your sister is coming from, her reaction was unnecessarily rude and over the top. Lyra is a perfectly fine name.”

Another person pointed out: “Have you informed your sister that she, in fact, is a millennial?”

“Yes, your child will get called Leera sometimes, but all she has to do is correct them. It’s not going to destroy her or her life because of it,” added a third.

A fourth also commented: “So Lyra is a cute name. I’m a teacher, and I did read it as ’Leera’ at first. I have a weird name too, so growing up I would correct the teacher and we’d be fine.

“So yeah, people may read the name wrong. That being said, it’s a lovely name, and is sooo far from the terrible names I’ve come across.”
